60 GHz Field Installation Workflow
- Sole designer
- Cambium Networks
- cnMaestro
Cambium's 60 GHz cnWave devices were deployed the hard way: field installers recorded device details on paper, then operations teams keyed those into CSVs before anything appeared in cnMaestro. The manual handoffs were slow, error-prone, and left admins blind to what had actually been installed.
As sole designer, I designed a guided Installer App and a companion Admin Portal that let contractors claim and configure devices right from the site — while giving network admins full control over which networks and sites installers can touch.

Paper records
Installers logged devices by hand on-site.
Claim on-site
The Installer App claims each device directly.
Guided install
A step-by-step flow with photo capture.
Auto-sync
Details flow straight into cnMaestro.
Admin control
Admins get live visibility and full control.

01The problem
Understanding the current flow
Installers recorded device details on paper on-site. Operations teams later transferred those into CSV files to provision the devices — so nothing was visible in cnMaestro until a chain of manual handoffs was complete.
The business impact
Those sequential handoffs slowed deployments, multiplied errors, and delayed visibility into newly installed devices — meaning slower customer onboarding and higher operational overhead at scale.
02Research & insights
Analysing the workflow
Working with product leads, the solutions team and developers, I mapped the existing flow and found the real challenge wasn't digitising paperwork — it was balancing a dead-simple installer experience with the control enterprise admins need.
Four key insights
Installers could mount hardware but couldn't complete onboarding on their own. Manual handoffs added real operational overhead. Installers needed a focused workflow, not full cnMaestro access. And enterprise customers wanted installer autonomy — but only inside enforced security boundaries.
03Defining the problem
The reframe
I reframed the challenge from “how do we support cnWave deployments” to: “How might we let field installers onboard 60 GHz cnWave devices directly from the site, while customer admins keep complete control over approved networks, sites and deployment rules?”
Success would be measured by installer-app adoption, deployment completion time, reduced manual effort, and installation success rate without extra intervention.
04The solution
Two connected experiences
The design splits the work cleanly: an Admin Portal where deployments are prepared in advance, and a mobile Installer App built for technicians working outdoors — moving complexity off the field and into preparation.
Administrator portal
Admins create scoped Installer Applications that expose only the resources a given deployment needs, invite installers via secure email, white-label the experience for service providers, and pre-provision device details from a CSV template before anyone reaches the site.
Installer mobile experience
The app offers one-tap email sign-in, streamlined device claiming, a guided install flow, built-in photo capture, and automatic sync back to cnMaestro — all designed for bright sunlight and patchy connectivity.
Why this design worked
Preparation happens before technicians arrive, so field effort drops; pre-provisioning cuts configuration errors; planning and execution are clearly separated; and automatic sync gives admins immediate visibility into deployment status.
05Impact
A new deployment workflow
The feature shipped in cnMaestro, eliminating manual provisioning and spreadsheet coordination. Installers do less, installations are more accurate, admins gain real-time visibility, and white-label branding lets service providers scale the experience under their own name.
