IRCTC is India's national train-booking platform, serving around 20 million users a day — and a source of recurring frustration for almost everyone who uses it.

Frustrated by the same issues over and over, I reimagined the entire ticket-booking journey around clarity, progressive disclosure and quiet, confidence-building design — the kind of “invisible” design that removes friction without demanding attention.

IRCTC redesign — product overview

01Home screen

From clutter to categories

The original home screen threw 15+ actions at users with no hierarchy. I grouped them into three meaningful sets — Ticket Management, Planning & Status, and Wallet & Payments — so people find what they need fast.

02Search & results

A guided search

Cluttered, ambiguous inputs became a step-by-step flow — stations, then date, then class — that progresses naturally instead of overwhelming users at the very start.

Search experience redesign

Scannable results

The results screen now leads with only the essential train details and reveals class-specific information on demand, with real-time seat availability front and centre on each train card — so comparing trains is fast.

Filters that help

Filters are grouped into clear sections with room to breathe, so users apply the right criteria instead of endlessly scrolling past irrelevant results.

03Passenger details & review

Supportive data entry

The dense passenger form is broken into structured, easy steps with better spacing, so entering details feels supported rather than tedious.

Passenger details flow

Confident review

The review screen gives every detail room to breathe, so travellers can verify everything at a glance — a final moment of confidence before payment.

04Payment & confirmation

Recognisable payment

Payment options are grouped by type with clear labels and hierarchy, so users spot their preferred method and check out confidently.

Payment flow redesign

A confirmation that reassures

The old success state was flat. The redesigned confirmation delivers real emotional closure — clear ticket details and unmistakable success cues that reinforce trust.

05Outcome

What success looks like

As a personal project there are no production metrics, but the targets were clear — higher booking completion and lower time-to-book. The feedback echoed the problem itself: “why doesn't it already work like this?”
